Prologue

The pink, cat-like creature turned to say a farewell to Lyra. The grief-stricken girl had tears staining her eyes and blurring the Mew as she leapt from her stand and onto the pool. Mew levitated over the water's surface, sparks flying over the surface of her skin. A massive beam ripped from the skies, devouring Mew in a thunderclap. Lyra was thrown back to New Bark Town by the force of the beam and Mew tried to get her back. Mew's hand stretched out of the beam and the rest of Mew's body pulsed. Mew threw her hand back in and stuck her little belly out of the beam. Mew's body froze and rippled, muscles popping and body deforming itself, tails bursting out of Mew's butt. Her existing tail shortened and curled, then turned brown. Eventually Mew was another creature entirely.

"Who am I?" Mew asked the air, her mouth numb and her words illegible. Then the beam faded, letting Mew sink into the water. She tried to hover above the water, but she couldn't. She was no longer Mew.

She was Vulpix.
